Why Chess is so popular

Chess is one of the most popular games of our time and has been played for many, many years. It is loved all over the world by men women and children and many people have become addicted to playing it. Why is this game so popular? Well, it may be the mental stimulation that you get from it. It forces you to think logically and figure out every possible scenario in your head from the beginning of the game until the very end. It gets you hooked from the first time you play it and our natural human instinct to solve problems and to win is what drives the players.

Though appearing to be confusing at first the rules of Chess are quite easy to learn. Chess is a game for two played on a board of sixty four alternate black and white squares. The two opponents are called White and Black. The goal of each opponent is to attack the other opponent’s King so that it has no escape. This game requires strategic planning like that of an army in battle. One of the most important things to do is to set goals- careful planning can help one attain these goals in the game. The same rule applies for life because every step needs a strategy and a plan.

Chess is also a fun game. It involves a lot of basic steps for different pieces (like the rules for each piece to move) and a lot of different strategies to play. The most basic method is to count the total value of pieces on both sides for evaluation of points - pawns are considered to be worth one point, knights and bishops’ three points each, rooks five points, and queens nine points. The fighting value of the king in the endgame is approximately four points.

One of the reasons why chess is popular amidst the old and young alike is that it depends on logical thinking rather than special skill. And more logic gives way to improved mental ability. We can rather say that chess is a clever game.
